Sports Minister Kofi Adams has warned Ghana could lose the 2027 U-20 AFCON hosting rights if key stadium upgrades are not completed.
Ghana secured the hosting rights for the youth continental competition as part of activities marking the country’s 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations. However, concerns have emerged over the condition of some venues earmarked for the tournament and their ability to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.
Speaking in an interview with TV3, Mr Adams stressed that upgrading the country’s stadium infrastructure is essential to ensuring Ghana successfully hosts the competition.
“Ghana has gotten the bid to host the U-20 African Championship next year, but we cannot host these events if we don’t upgrade some of our facilities,” he said.
The Buem Member of Parliament cautioned that failure to undertake the necessary rehabilitation works could jeopardise Ghana’s hosting status and affect the country’s opportunity to showcase its football development capabilities.
The warning comes amid ongoing discussions about the state of Ghana’s sports infrastructure, with authorities expected to begin renovation works on selected stadiums ahead of the tournament.
