The National House of Chiefs has urged the government to stop using the nickname “MahamaCares” for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, warning that linking the scheme to a sitting president could politicize it and weaken public trust.
In a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama, the chiefs welcomed the fund’s goal, to support Ghanaians with chronic and life‑threatening illnesses but said it should be presented and managed as a national programme rather than one tied to a political figure.
They recommended emphasizing the fund’s formal title, Ghana Medical Trust Fund, to promote broad ownership across political divides and ensure continuity under future governments.
The chiefs also called for the fund to be properly resourced and run with transparency so it can sustainably assist patients facing severe medical costs.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, included in President Mahama’s 2024 manifesto, was created to help finance treatment for chronic and serious conditions and reduce out‑of‑pocket expenses.
Government officials describe it as a significant step toward improving access to quality healthcare for vulnerable citizens.
