President John Dramani Mahama, has directed the Minister for Finance to release GHS 300 million from the Contingency Fund to support urgent flood relief and mitigation efforts following heavy rainfall that inundated parts of Accra and other southern communities.
According to a press release signed by the Member of Parliament and Presidential Spokesperson at the Ministry of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, GHS 150 million of the allocation will be used to finance immediate relief for flood-affected persons and communities.
The remaining GHS 150 million will fund flood-mitigation measures aimed at reducing future incidents of flooding.
The President also ordered the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to work alongside the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations across the city.
President Mahama earlier conducted an aerial tour of the most affected areas to assess the full extent of the damage and announced a series of steps to safeguard residents and prevent further flooding.
This measures are intended to address urgent humanitarian needs while funding longer-term interventions to reduce flood risk in the southern sector.
