The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a fresh weather alert indicating a high probability of continued rainfall over Accra from Thursday through Sunday, heightening fears of renewed flooding in the capital.
The warning comes after hours of intense rainfall triggered severe flooding across multiple parts of Accra, submerging roads, disrupting transport networks, and affecting several communities.
Deputy Director-General of GMet in charge of Operations, Dr Ignatius Kweku Williams, said weather conditions remain unstable, with continued rainfall expected to persist into Thursday.
He urged the public to remain alert and rely on official updates from the agency, stressing the importance of timely information in responding to evolving weather patterns. “High probability of continued rainfall from Thursday through Sunday,” GMet stated through Dr Williams, as he advised residents to stay cautious and monitor official communication channels.
The recent downpour has left several areas in Accra struggling to recover, with floodwaters affecting homes, businesses, and major transport corridors.
Communities such as Kasoa Top Town, Mallam, Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Circle, Weija, Adentan, East Legon, Achimota, Spintex, and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange were among the worst affected.
Motorists faced significant disruption, with many forced to abandon routes or navigate submerged roads, while commuters were left stranded amid heavy traffic congestion.
Emergency response teams continue to assess the extent of damage, as authorities maintain surveillance over flood-prone areas across the capital.
Officials have urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone communities to take precautionary measures as the rainy season intensifies, warning that Accra remains highly vulnerable due to drainage challenges and rapid urban expansion.
