President John Dramani Mahama, has confirmed ongoing talks with a potential investor to restart operations at the long-dormant Komenda Sugar Factory, saying the government is weighing how best to protect local production without jeopardizing supply.
Speaking on Saturday, June 27, during his Resetting Ghana Tour in the Central Region, the President emphasized that initial revival efforts began before his administration and that the Ministry of Trade has met the investor to assess the plant’s viability.
He noted that central to the investor’s proposal is a request for a ban on imported refined sugar to secure a guaranteed domestic market for the factory’s output.
“What he wanted was a ban on imported sugar so that he would have the local market. But we also need to assess his capability before we issue a ban. Otherwise, supply may not be able to meet demand,” he stated.
President Mahama said deliberations are continuing and indicated the government may opt for a gradual reduction in sugar imports to create room for local manufacturing while protecting consumers.
“We are still engaging the investor and we may gradually reduce imports to create space for local production while ensuring that the country’s demand is adequately met,” he added.
