Antoine Semenyo has urged Ghana’s Black Stars to stay focused and avoid complacency after their opening 1-0 World Cup win over Panama.
The forward says the team must not get carried away following their narrow but morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Panama on Wednesday, June 17, in Toronto.
The match at BMO Field was decided deep into stoppage time when 20-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi struck a dramatic winner, securing all three points for the side coached by Carlos Queiroz.
The result sparked celebrations among Ghanaian supporters and placed the team in a strong position in Group L heading into their next fixture.
However, Semenyo cautioned that tougher tests lie ahead, particularly against England in their next group match.
“We know it’s going to be a tough game,” Semenyo said after the match.
He added: “We’re not getting ahead of ourselves. Of course, we want to win, but we understand it won’t be easy.”
Ghana’s performance against Panama was defined by structure, patience, and defensive resilience. The Black Stars remained compact for long spells and withstood pressure, including a scare involving goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, before finding the decisive breakthrough in added time.
The victory strengthens Ghana’s chances of advancing in Group L, with another positive result against England potentially pushing them closer to qualification for the knockout stage of the tournament.
