Ghana opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in dramatic fashion, edging Panama 1-0 thanks to a stoppage‑time winner from Caleb Yirenkyi in a tense Group L clash in Toronto.
The Black Stars had appeared destined for a frustrating draw before Yirenkyi struck in the 95th minute to secure all three points for Ghana.
Panama posed the greater attacking threat for much of the match, creating the clearer openings in the first half and forcing Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati‑Zigi into several decisive saves before he was substituted at half‑time with an injury.
Ghana grew into the contest after the interval, with Jonas Adjetey and Jordan Ayew coming close as Carlos Queiroz’s side increased the pressure and sought a breakthrough.
When a goalless stalemate seemed inevitable, substitute Brandon Thomas‑Asante surged down the left and delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Yirenkyi timed his run perfectly to convert, prompting jubilant scenes among the Ghana squad and travelling supporters.
The victory provides Ghana with a valuable start in a challenging group and places the Black Stars second in Group L behind England, who earlier beat Croatia 4-2.
Both teams sit on three points after one match, with England ahead on goal difference. Panama and Croatia remain without a point.
The result is a significant boost to Ghana’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages. With England regarded as group favourites, claiming three points against Panama was vital, and the Black Stars now head into their next fixture aware that another positive result could put them on course for the round of 32. Ghana face England next on June 23.
