Ghana loses appeal to allow Thomas Partey into Canada

A Canadian Federal Court has dismissed Ghana’s appeal seeking to overturn the decision to refuse midfielder Thomas Partey a visa.

The 33‑year‑old’s entry was blocked because of ongoing criminal proceedings in the United Kingdom.

Partey has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, alleged by four different women between 2020 and 2022, and is scheduled to face trial next year.

The Ghanaian government, which described the refusal as “high‑handed and extremely unfair”, applied for permission for Partey to be granted a short‑term visa so he could take part in Ghana’s match against Panama.

It also asked the court to order Canadian immigration authorities to permit Partey to lodge a fresh visa application.

However, Ghana suffered a setback at a Federal Court hearing in Ottawa on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, when the court upheld the decision to refuse the midfielder entry to Canada. Partey will therefore remain at the team’s base in the United States.

As a result, he will miss Ghana’s World Cup opener against Panama in Toronto on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 23:00 GMT.
