Tunisia sack manager Lamouchi after World Cup thrashing by Sweden

The Tunisian Football Federation sacked manager Sabri Lamouchi on Monday, June 15, after the men’s team were dismantled 5-1 by Sweden in their FIFA World Cup opener on Sunday, according to multiple reports.

Lamouchi, 54, had a short-lived reign, overseeing just five matches in charge of Tunisia.

His Eagles of Carthage beat Haiti 1-0 in his first game, an international friendly, but scored only once in the subsequent four matches, one of which was a 0-0 draw against Canada in a friendly on March 31.

Born in France, Lamouchi holds dual French and Tunisian citizenship. As a midfielder in his playing career, he won 12 caps for the French national team.

His managerial career has included spells in Ligue 1 with Rennes, in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, and a three-year stint with the Côte d’Ivoire national team, whom he led at the 2014 World Cup.

Sunday’s heavy defeat leaves Tunisia facing an uphill task to remain in contention in Group F. Earlier in the day Japan and the Netherlands played out a 2-2 draw, meaning both sides hold a points advantage going into the second round of matches.

Tunisia, ranked 56th in the FIFA men’s world rankings, have yet to confirm the sacking or name a potential replacement. They will play their next match against 18th-ranked Japan on Sunday June 12, before finishing the group against eighth-ranked the Netherlands on June 25.
