Cambodian Interior Ministry denounces fabricated notice claiming Africans must leave by May 31

The Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia has dismissed as false and fabricated online reports asserting that African nationals with expired immigration waivers were ordered to leave the country by May 31, 2026.

In a statement released from Phnom Penh on Thursday, May 29, 2026, Cambodian officials condemned the circulation of a falsified immigration notice purportedly issued by the General Department of Immigration.

According to the Ministry, two Ghana-based outlets, Campaigner Online and News Ghana, carried an English-language article headed “Cambodia Orders Africans with Expired Immigration Waivers to Leave by May 31, 2026”, accompanied by the spurious document.

The Cambodian government firmly rejected the publication’s authenticity, emphasising that no such instruction has been issued by any state body.

“The Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia categorically rejects the fabrication of this public document and the dissemination of such false information,” the statement said.

Authorities in Cambodia characterised the reports as a deliberate attempt to misrepresent facts, mislead international opinion and harm the nation’s reputation.

The Ministry clarified that Cambodia has never enacted any policy directing African nationals to leave the country, contrary to the claims circulated.

Instead, the government reiterated its commitment to receiving foreigners who meet Cambodian immigration and legal requirements, including tourists, investors, business people and foreign workers, without discrimination.

“Cambodia has consistently welcomed all foreigners who fully comply with applicable legal requirements to enter and reside in Cambodia without any discrimination,” the statement added.

The Ministry also urged both domestic and international media organisations to uphold professional standards, accuracy and responsibility when publishing material, warning that the spread of misinformation can create unwarranted misunderstandings about Cambodia among the international community.

The clarification was issued against a backdrop of rising concern over the rapid dissemination of unverified information on digital and social platforms, particularly on issues concerning immigration and foreign affairs.

Cambodian authorities encouraged the public to rely on official government communication channels for authoritative information on immigration policies and international relations.
