Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as fake a widely circulated notice claiming that Cambodian authorities had ordered Ghanaians to leave the country.
According to the Ministry, the fake circular alleged that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and other African countries had been directed to leave Cambodia by May 31, 2026 or risk arrest, imprisonment and financial penalties for immigration violations.
"The Ministry of Forcign Affairs has become aware of a fake notice circulating widely on social and traditional media platforms, purportedly issued by the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia, regarding alleged immigration measures targeting Afican nationals resident in Cambodia," it said
However, in a statement released, the Ministry assured the public that, following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it has been confirmed that the said notice is absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia.
It noted that the General Department of Immigration of the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Cambodia has today issued a press clarification stating categorically that the said notice is "completely untrue."
The statement further cautioned the media to disregard the discredited document and avoid sharing unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and anxiety among affected persons and their families.

The Ministry, however, revealed that some Ghanaian nationals resident in Cambodia had, prior to this development, expressed a desire to return voluntarily to Ghana.
It cited that the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Cambodia, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, has already facilitated the evacuation of eighty-five (85) Ghanaian nationals between March and May 2026.
It noted that arrangements are ongoing to facilitate the evacuation of an additional seventy-six (76) Ghanaian nationals who are currently in Cambodia and have expressed the desire to return home.
The statement assured that the Ministry will continue to work in close collaboration with all relevant authorities to ensure the safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working in conjunction with competent authorities in Cambodia to ensure the safe return of these Ghanaians.
"We commend the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for their impressive cooperation," the Ministry commended.
The Government of Ghana reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Ghanaian nationals and urged the public to rely solely on official sources for information on matters concerning Ghanaian nationals.
