The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has announced a nationwide ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of polystyrene foam products known as “Styrofoam” or “takeaway packs” effective Friday, January 1, 2027.
In a statement issued by management on Monday, May 25, 2026, the EPA explained that the prohibition covers all forms of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam products used for human and commercial activities, including food packaging containers and takeaway packs, disposable cups and plates, and foam packs used by restaurants, chop bars, and food vendors.
According to the Authority, the directive follows a policy announcement made by President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, June 5, 2025, during World Environment Day, as part of broader efforts to curb plastic pollution, protect public health, and promote sustainable development.
The Authority also banned the use of ceiling and insulation materials made from polystyrene foam, foam mattresses and bedding materials, packaging and cushioning materials, and any other form of polystyrene foam intended for human use.
EPA noted that EPS products specifically intended for medical, scientific, laboratory, and diagnostic uses will be excluded, subject to applicable regulations.
To allow industry players and consumers to prepare, the EPA urged manufacturers, importers, distributors, and users to begin transitioning to safer, reusable, and recyclable alternatives immediately.
Over the transition period leading up to the implementation date, the Authority plans to carry out nationwide stakeholder engagements, public education campaigns, technical consultations, as well as intensify compliance monitoring, regulatory inspections, and enforcement preparedness.
The EPA also said it will work closely with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), port authorities, customs officials, and other regulators to ensure effective enforcement across the country once the ban takes effect.
The Authority urged the public to support the measure by adopting sustainable consumption practices and using environmentally friendly packaging alternatives, saying, “Protecting the environment is our collective responsibility.”
