The Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has reiterated government’s plan to reduce maternal mortality by 20% by the end of 2026.
Speaking during a working visit to the Awutu Senya East Municipal Health Directorate under Phase 3 of the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Programme (MMARP), she said maternal mortality remains Ghana’s only worsening health indicator, with over 950 deaths recorded last year despite increased access to skilled care.
"Maternal Mortality rate has remained only worsening health indicator in our country with over 950 deaths recorded last year despite efforts in increasing access to skilled care," she stated.
She noted that a nationwide action plan will focus on early detection at the primary‑healthcare level, improved referrals and better‑equipped facilities.
At the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, the Deputy Minister led the presentation of critical equipment, including a digital X‑ray machine, an ultrasound scanner, delivery beds and other essential items, following a recent visit by the Health Minister.
She also announced plans to deploy additional doctors, midwives and support staff to strengthen service delivery at the high‑volume facility.
She also paid a working visit to the Kasoa Polyclinic, where she engaged health workers on frontline challenges and stressed the urgent need to address referral delays and maternal emergencies.
She underscored the importance of compassionate care and staff welfare, and called for practical input from healthcare workers to inform interventions.
"This visit forms part of intensified government efforts to reduce preventable maternal deaths and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes nationwide," she said.
