The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has called on the Greater Accra Regional Minister to take urgent steps to shut down the livestock market at Kanda, near the National Mosque.
The committee’s vice‑chairman, Davis Opoku Ansah, said the growing cattle and goat trading at the site is harming the capital’s image and must be stopped.
He noted that the market has expanded rapidly and now includes larger animals such as camels.
"We are all looking on allowing this business to grow first it was about 5,6 cows now you go there you see over 100 cows there and cattle, they sell goats there, they sell cattle there and now they are selling camels.
"What is your Ministry doing about this, have you allowed that to happen," he questioned.
Opoku Ansah said the stretch that includes the National Mosque has effectively been turned into a livestock‑selling centre, which he described as inappropriate for a prominent public and religious area.
He urged authorities to prioritise beautification and restore the area’s suitability as part of the heart of Accra.
The PAC promted the Greater Accra Regional Minister to act swiftly to remove the livestock market and protect the capital’s public spaces.
"We have our National Mosque on the stretch towards Kanda and the place has been turned into a cow selling centre, in fact this week when I passed there I saw them even selling camels there.
"I mean that is the heart of Accra, that is the capital, we have spent monies even at a point we had a ministry which was in charge of the beautification of Accra," he stated.
