Gov't moves to establish National Defence University with new bill

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has held discussions with the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, as part of pre-session engagements on the proposed National Defence University Ghana Bill, 2026.

The meeting was also aimed at briefing the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, on key government legislative proposals, including the Defence University Bill expected to be laid before the House.

Mr. Genfi indicated that Cabinet has already approved the bill, which is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education, paving the way for its formal presentation to Parliament.

The proposed legislation seeks to establish a central coordinating authority to regulate, supervise, and standardise defence education and training within the Ghana Armed Forces.

According to officials, the framework is intended to strengthen academic standards, improve quality assurance, and ensure a unified system for awarding degrees and certificates under a recognised national authority.

Officials from the Ministry of Defence who took part in the engagement stressed the importance of creating a structured system to enhance professionalism and academic credibility within military education and training institutions.

The bill is expected to form part of government’s broader reforms aimed at modernising defence education and aligning it with national and international academic standards once it is laid before Parliament.
