Ghana’s Black Starlets suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Senegal in their second Group D match at the 2026 U 17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, despite playing against ten men for more than half an hour.
The result leaves Ghana at the bottom of Group D with one point, setting up a decisive final group game against South Africa.
The Starlets began the match brightly and thought they had taken an early lead, but their goal was ruled out by VAR in the eighth minute.
Senegal’s task became more difficult in the 42nd minute when El Hadji Sow was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.
However, Ghana failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage before the break, with Isaac Barfo squandering a penalty in first half stoppage time.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Senegal returned from the break with greater urgency and broke the deadlock in the 57th minute through Ibrahima Dione. The goal proved decisive as the former champions tightened their defensive structure and frustrated Ghana’s attacking efforts.
The Black Starlets pushed forward in search of an equaliser in the closing stages but struggled to break down Senegal’s resilient defence, even with the man advantage.
Senegal held firm to secure all three points, leaving Ghana needing a positive result in their final group fixture to keep their qualification hopes alive.
