U-17 AFCON: Ghana surrender two-goal lead in 2-2 draw with Algeria in group opener

Ghana’s Black Starlets were left to rue a missed opportunity after blowing a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Algeria in their opening Group D match of the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday evening.

The entertaining encounter at the Mohammed VI Football Academy saw Ghana make a blistering start, scoring twice within the opening 10 minutes to seize early control of the game.

Gavi Yao opened the scoring in the third minute after capitalising on a costly mistake from the Algerian goalkeeper, calmly finishing to give Ghana a dream start.

Just seven minutes later, Eric Gyamfi doubled the lead with a stunning long-range chipped effort that left the goalkeeper stranded and stunned spectators.

With a commanding 2-0 advantage early on, the Black Starlets looked firmly in control and dictated proceedings with high pressing and quick attacking transitions.

However, Algeria responded strongly after the break, showing renewed intensity and composure in midfield as they gradually worked their way back into the contest.

Their pressure paid off in the 57th minute when Adam Benali pulled one back after a well-timed pass from Mahdi Maghlout split the Ghanaian defence.

Just three minutes later, Zaidi completed the comeback for Algeria, restoring parity and shifting momentum firmly in favour of the North Africans.

Ghana were handed a scare in the 67th minute when Algeria were awarded a penalty following a defensive lapse, but relief followed for the Black Starlets as Ilyas Grini fired his spot-kick over the bar.

Despite late efforts from both sides in an end-to-end finish, neither team could find a winner as the match ended level.

The result leaves Ghana with mixed emotions after a strong attacking start but defensive lapses that cost them maximum points. The Black Starlets will now turn their attention to a crucial Group D clash against Senegal, a fixture that could prove decisive in their bid to progress in the tournament.
