TikTok introduces £3.99 monthly ad-free subscription for UK users

TikTok is set to launch a new subscription option in the UK, which will allow users to enjoy the platform without adverts for a monthly fee.‎

‎The app will begin notifying users aged 18 and above about the new plan, which costs £3.99 per month and removes ads from their viewing experience.

‎‎Users have until November 11 to decide whether to subscribe for an ad-free feed or continue using the app at no cost, supported by personalised advertising.

‎‎According to TikTok, the subscription is designed to give users more control over how they engage with content.

‎However, social media analyst Matt Navarra argues that the move reflects a broader industry trend, where companies are “charging users to opt out of targeted advertising systems.”

‎‎Those who choose not to pay will still be able to access the platform for free, but will see tailored ads based on their activity.

‎‎TikTok also noted that users can manage certain data preferences related to advertising through the app’s settings.

‎However, unlike before, UK users will no longer have the option to completely opt out of targeted ads while using the free version.

‎Other major platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat, have introduced similar subscription models in recent years, offering reduced or ad-free experiences at a cost.‎

‎TikTok says it will gradually roll out its “TikTok Ad-Free” option through in-app notifications over the coming months.

‎‎TikTok’s UK Managing Director, Kris Boger highlighted the benefits of the platform’s advertising model, stating that it already helps thousands of British businesses expand their reach, boost sales, and generate employment opportunities.

‎He added that the new subscription provides users with greater flexibility and choice.

‎Subscribers who opt for the ad-free plan will no longer see ads integrated into areas like the “For You” feed.

‎However, branded content from creators, often marked with “#ad” will still appear on the platform.
