Minority Leader pushes for reversal of cocoa price cut

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has announced that the Minority Caucus will seek to reverse the recent reduction in cocoa prices when Parliament resumes sitting.

He made this statement during a visit to cocoa farmers on Friday, May 8, in Agona West District. The visit aimed to show solidarity with farmers who highlighted the negative impact of the price cut on their livelihoods and their children's welfare.

Speaking to the media, Hon Afenyo-Markin affirmed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains committed to championing the interests of cocoa farmers nationwide.

He urged them to stay hopeful and continue supporting the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.

"To draw government attention to this unfortunate situation and push for a reversal of that reduction so that at least they increase it back to Ghc3500 if not all.

"But as it is they have really ... our cocoa farmers, is not only cocoa rice farmers are suffering, maize farmers are suffering. Today in Ghana importation of rice is cheaper than locally produce rice.

"Our farmers are suffering, nobody seems to care rather it appears that government promoting galamsey through GoldBod. They promised to do away with galamsey but it appears that they are more interested in GoldBod.

"And encouraging more and more of our youth to get into galamsey so that they can get the Gold as it were to stabilize the cedi but is not about stabilizing the cedi through environmental distraction," he said.

The Odikro of Agona Nsonan, Nana Kofi, described the situation as a total failure on the part of President John Dramani Mahama towards cocoa farmers.

He noted that cocoa farmers continue to play a major role in Ghana’s economy, yet they face serious hardship due to the price reduction.

Nana Kofi disclosed that the current challenges are severely affecting farmers’ welfare and their families, making it difficult to cover children’s education and other basic needs.
