Kasoa: Pregnant woman who died at Mother and Child Hospital laid to rest

A pregnant woman, Abigail Opoku, who died under controversial circumstances at the Mother and Child Hospital, has been laid to rest in an emotional burial service marked by grief, anger, and renewed calls for accountability over maternal healthcare delivery.

The burial took place on Saturday, May 9, with family members, friends, and sympathisers weeping openly as they bid farewell to the deceased, whose death has triggered public concern and allegations of medical negligence against the facility.

Abigail reportedly died while in labour after an alleged delay in receiving emergency care, including a requested caesarean section. According to her family, she was first taken to a private health facility before being referred to the Kasoa-based hospital when labour complications worsened.

Family accounts suggest that upon arrival at the Mother and Child Hospital, repeated requests for an emergency caesarean section were declined, with medical staff reportedly citing a lack of available beds in the recovery ward as the reason for the delay.

Her sister told Citi News that despite prolonged labour, intervention was not carried out in time. Abigail is said to have died nearly 36 hours after admission, with her unborn baby still in her womb.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, April 26, has since sparked public outrage, with the family alleging that similar incidents may have been previously recorded at the facility.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service has confirmed that investigations have been launched into the circumstances surrounding her death, as pressure mounts for clarity and possible accountability.
