Ghana Mission urges vigilance amid South Africa tensions

The Ghana High Commission in South Africa, Pretoria, has urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant amid reports of threats, harassment, and forced shop closures, especially in KwaZulu-Natal.

In a statement on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the High Commission highlighted a concerning pattern targeting foreign nationals, advising Ghanaian community members to avoid confrontational situations and safeguard their businesses.

The statement noted that South African law protects public demonstrations, making it difficult for authorities to prohibit or disperse them.

They also warned Ghanaian nationals to remain careful and take necessary steps to reduce potential risks:

“Exercise caution in areas where demonstrations or community actions are taking place;

“Monitor local developments and avoid high-risk locations whenever possible;

“Report any incidents of threats, harassment, intimidation, or violence to the nearest police station and the High Commission immediately;

“Avoid spreading unverified information that may create unnecessary panic or tension,” part of the statement emphasized.

The High Commission says it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with South African authorities to protect Ghanaians and their businesses.
