The National Identification Authority (NIA) says it has increased fees for certain services, citing the need to maintain and improve the quality of service delivery.
In a public notice, the Authority stated that the increment will affect first-time registration, updates to personal information, replacement services, updates to nationality, and non-citizen Ghana Card registration.
According to the NIA, the price adjustment has become necessary to enable the Authority to sustain operations and enhance customer service across the country.
Background
The National Identification Authority is the statutory body mandated to register and issue national identity cards to citizens and non citizens legally resident in Ghana. Established under the National Identification Authority Act, 2006 (Act 707), and strengthened by subsequent amendments including Act 950, the Authority serves as the central institution for identity management in Ghana.
The NIA is responsible for issuing the Ghana Card, which has become the primary national identification document and is widely used for accessing public and private services, including banking, passport acquisition, voter registration, telecommunications services, social protection programmes, and other government transactions.
Beyond first time registration, the Authority also provides services such as personal information updates, replacement of lost or damaged cards, nationality status updates, and registration of non citizens. These services help ensure the accuracy, integrity, and reliability of the national identity database, which is critical to national security, efficient public service delivery, and economic planning.
In recent years, the NIA has expanded registration nationwide through fixed offices and mobile registration centres, while integrating the Ghana Card into multiple national systems as part of Ghana’s digitalisation drive to reduce identity fraud and improve public administration.
The Authority noted that periodic reviews of service charges are required to sustain these efforts and ensure the continued delivery of secure, efficient, and transparent identity services.
It expressed appreciation to the general public for their understanding and continued support as it works to enhance national identification services.
