The Minority in Parliament has warned against the politicisation of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), noting that it could weaken the institution’s independence.
Speaking to the press, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency, Kojo Oppong-Nkruma, criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) press conference held in connection with the announcement of the Bank of Ghana’s accounts before the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson presented them to Parliament.
"The act does not say that the Bank of Ghana should hand over the account to a political party to announce prio to the Minister presenting it to Parliament.
"What happened on that Thursday when the NDC party including non MPs to hold a press conference to announce the audited account of the Bank of Ghana was an illegality, an act of blatant politicisation of the Bank of Ghana and its work," he stated.
He added that the Governor, the Board of the Bank of Ghana, and the government should take note that politicising the central bank would create issues for the Bank’s operational independence and credibility going forward, and therefore it must stop.
He stressed that the Bank is not a political party and that the Board of the Bank is not the majority caucus.
As such, he said, the Auditor-General’s statement on the central bank cannot be reduced to a political party’s press release, nor should it be treated as an instruction for the Governor.
"Mr Governor if you allow the NDC party to dictate to you how to comply with the laws, is a precedence that will collapse the operational independence of the Central Bank.
"The Bank is not a political party, the Board of the Bank is not the majority caucus, the auditors statement of the Central Bank can not be reduced to a political party's press release, politicisation of the work of the Bank is corrosive and it should not happen again," he said.
