Transformer replacement timetable for nationwide rollout to be announced soon – Jinapor

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has revealed that a nationwide timetable for transformer replacement and upgrades will be released in the coming weeks as part of government efforts to stabilise electricity supply across Ghana.

Addressing a town hall meeting in Koforidua, Mr Jinapor disclosed that 140 new transformers have already been installed, with an additional 300 expected to be deployed soon to improve reliability in power distribution nationwide.

He assured Ghanaians that the government is determined to prevent a return to the era of persistent power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” stressing that current interventions are aimed at strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure.

The minister also commended engineers and technical staff of the Volta River Authority and Ghana Grid Company for their rapid response in restoring electricity following a recent fire outbreak at the Akosombo GRIDCo substation.

“What you’ve achieved is unparalleled, and we have absolute confidence in you,” he stated.

Mr Jinapor further indicated that Ghana’s power generation capacity remains robust, noting that the country is not only meeting domestic demand but also exporting electricity to neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Togo.

Addressing concerns about the source of the transformers, the minister clarified that the ongoing installations are part of a new procurement initiative and not inherited stock.

“You have installed over 2,500 transformers. Let me put on record, these are not transformers that we inherited,” he emphasised, dismissing claims of misinformation.

According to him, the government is on course to install more than 2,500 transformers nationwide, describing the current energy situation as stable.

Mr Jinapor credited the procurement drive to the leadership of John Dramani Mahama and Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, noting that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s power infrastructure.
