Government rollout 2,500 new transformers for energy stability - Energy Minister

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has said Ghana’s power situation is currently stable as the government rolls out more than 2,500 new transformers nationwide.

Speaking at the Resetting Ghana Citizen Engagement with the President in Koforidua, he stressed that the transformers were newly procured under President John Dramani Mahama and the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, and were not inherited from the previous administration.

He noted that the initiative is intended to strengthen the country’s power infrastructure and ensure energy stability.

"We are installing over 2,500 transformers and let me put on record these are not transformers that we inherited, I have heard some misinformation going on, they are transformers that his excellency John Dramani Mahama and hon. Ato Forson purchased with money to help stabilise energy," he stated.

He added that a nationwide, detailed timetable for the transformer replacement and upgrade exercise would be released in the coming weeks.

He said that 140 transformers had already been replaced last week, with a further 300 expected to be replaced next week, to stabilise power supply and prevent a return to "dumsor."

He also commended staff of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) for working extensively to restore the Akosombo substation following the fire outbreak, as well as Ghanaians for their patience and understanding during the difficult period.

He future assured Ghanaians that they will do everything they can to stabilise the energy sector.

"Thank you to the staff of VRA and GRIDCo for the job you've done you deserve commendation what you've achieved is unparalleled and we have absolute confidence in you.

"When we got the challenge we admitted it, dealt with it and resolved it comprehensively and I will thank Ghanaians these few days we encountered this challenges most of called me and encouraged us that we can do it, by the grace of God we have done it," he said.
