VRA engages stakeholders on Emergency Preparedness Plan to avoid disaster from spillage at Akosombo and Kpong dams

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has engaged stakeholders in the Asuogyaman District on its 2026 Emergency Preparedness Plan to help prevent disaster in the event of spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, or a dam break.

The engagement includes the Asuogyaman District Assembly, chiefs, religious leaders, and assembly members, among others, in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, when the Akosombo and Kpong dams spill or a dam break occurs.

Speaking at the 2026 Emergency Preparedness Plan workshop at Atimpoku, Ing. Philip Tetteh Padi, Manager of the Integrated Water Resources Management and Renewal Energy Department at VRA, stated that the workshop forms part of VRA’s annual sensitisation of stakeholders and residents across the downstream areas of the Akosombo and Kpong dams to the estuary.

He added that this helps prepare communities for emergencies, as many residents live along the Volta Lake.

According to him, certain emergencies could arise, and he cited spillage activities and dam break activities as examples. He noted that engaging stakeholders in the district would help clarify their roles in the event of an emergency.

"The emergency prepares a plan forms part of our annual sensitisation workshop for all our stakeholders downstream of the Akosombo Dam all the way up to the estuary. Because of the location where they find themselves downstream of the Akosombo Dam."

"There are certain emergency that could arrive and we've classified them to two folls, we have spillage activities and down break activities so the emergency prepare the plan outlines all these emergencies that could be arrived and the various stakeholders that we're engaging, their roles and responsibilities,"

"So that in a way of any spillage or down breaking they're all aware of our roles and responsibilities so today as part of engagement, we met all the stakeholders in the Asougyaman District Assembly to sensitize them about their Agency and their respective roles," he explained.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asuogyaman, Godwin Bobobee, urged VRA to collaborate with the Asuogyaman District Assembly to help guide investors building along the Volta Lake to boost tourism in the district, noting that Asuogyaman is the hub of tourism in the country.
