The Rector of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UNiMAC), Prof. Cecilia Addei, has urged Ghanaian workers who aspire to work in the diaspora to learn foreign languages to boost their communication skills and global competitiveness.
According to her, proficiency in languages such as French, Spanish, English and German is no longer optional, but a necessity in today’s interconnected world.
Prof. Addei made the call at the graduation ceremony of 320 students who completed certificate courses in Spanish, English, French and German at UNIMAC in Kumasi.
“As a worker, when you get the opportunity to study different languages, grab it and study because it opens doors.
"Language is a key tool for communication, and in today’s global economy, it gives you an advantage wherever you go. Employers abroad look for people who can speak more than one language,” she stated.
She added that the language programme was designed to equip graduates for careers in media, diplomacy, tourism, international business and other sectors that require cross-cultural communication.
The UNIMAC Rector also used the occasion to advise citizens against infringing on the rights of journalists.
Describing the media as the fourth estate of governance, she stressed their critical role in democracy and national development.
“The media are really important and we must protect them. If anyone is facing any challenge, they are the ones we run to.
"So we shouldn't maltreat the media. We must respect their work and allow them to do their job freely without fear or intimidation,” Prof. Addei added.
