The World Health Organization (WHO) has pledged continued support for Ghana’s drive to expand local pharmaceutical and vaccine production.

WHO Country Representative to Ghana, Dr Fiona Braka, led a delegation that met Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu‑Adjare in Accra on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, to deepen collaboration between the WHO, MOTAI, the Ministry of Health and regulators including the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).

Dr Braka said WHO assistance under its health‑systems strengthening framework will help build resilient pharmaceutical manufacturing capable of producing safe, quality and affordable medicines and vaccines, strengthen regulatory systems and reduce dependence on imports.

She said Ghana has made notable progress and is well positioned to be a leading producer in the sub‑region.

Minister Ofosu‑Adjare welcomed the WHO’s support, confirmed government approval of a new Pharmaceutical Policy to accelerate investment and boost local manufacturing, and committed the ministry to close collaboration with WHO, the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to develop a competitive pharmaceutical industry that meets national health needs and drives economic transformation.

The minister further announced that Ghana had recently approved the Pharmaceutical Policy, which will provide the framework for accelerating investment, promoting local manufacturing and improving the competitiveness of Ghana's pharmaceutical industry.
