The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MOTAI) has secured a €415,437.78 grant from the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development to finance the PharmaVax Programme.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations and Communications Update of MOTAI, it noted that this initiative is designed to transform Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector and position the country as a regional manufacturing hub.

Unveiling the programme at a meeting in Accra on Thursday, June 25, the Ministry said PharmaVax will target four core areas: strengthening governance institutions for the pharmaceutical sector; enhancing public–private dialogue; improving conditions for foreign direct investment and trade; and promoting transparency in investment and authorization processes.

The Director of Administration, Mr. Yaw Sakyi, speaking on behalf of Trade Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu‑Adjare, affirmed the government’s commitment to making Ghana the sub‑regional centre for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

He said the forthcoming pharmaceutical policy will provide the implementation framework needed to drive industry growth.

The Head of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Development Unit at MOTAI, Mr. Godfred Gobah, also said the Ministry will actively engage the private sector and increase the industry’s visibility through participation in local and international events to open new market opportunities for Ghanaian manufacturers.

The Ministry said PharmaVax is expected to establish a solid foundation for achieving several strategic targets by 2030, including doubling the export value of pharmaceutical products within the ECOWAS market and raising the market share of locally produced pharmaceuticals from 30 percent to 60 percent.

MOTAI added that it will implement the programme in collaboration with GIZ Ghana, the EU, and other key stakeholders to build a robust ecosystem that supports the growth of local pharmaceutical manufacturing.
