The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting agro‑processing as a primary driver of job creation, value addition and improved market access for Ghanaian farmers.
Speaking during a visit to P&A African Food International Limited in Accra, Hon. Opoku said the nation must move beyond raw production and invest more in processing, packaging, storage and distribution to strengthen the agricultural value chain.
He praised P&A African for transforming locally produced commodities into value‑added products for both domestic and international markets, calling the company’s investments “critical” to reducing post‑harvest losses, creating employment and increasing farmers’ incomes.
He noted that scaling up processing facilities would help retain value within Ghana, boost exports and provide sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.
He assured company leaders of government support as they seek to expand operations.
Mr. Opoku also urged Ghanaians to patronize locally produced goods, saying stronger local demand will help grow businesses, create jobs and bolster the national economy.
“Agro‑processing is the future of our agriculture, when consumers choose Ghanaian products, we keep more of the value chain at home, from farm to fork and that benefits farmers, processors and the country as a whole,” he stated.
He added that the Ministry has in recent years rolled out programs aimed at strengthening the value chain, from aggregation centres and mechanization support to incentives for private processors.
The industry's stakeholders welcomed the Minister’s remarks, saying clearer policy backing and targeted support including financing, capacity building and market linkages are essential for small and medium agro‑processors to scale up.
