Veteran gospel musician Yaw Sarpong to be laid to rest on May 9

The family of renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has officially announced his funeral arrangements following his passing on January 20, 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the family, his senior brother, Emmanuel Kwabena Opoku, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a painful moment for the family and the gospel music fraternity.

According to the announcement, the final funeral rites will begin on Saturday, May 9, 2026, with a wake-keeping ceremony on Friday, May 8.

He explained that, after the wake-keeping, friends, fans, and sympathisers will have the opportunity to pay their last respects during the lying-in-state at Asuofua Town Park.

"If you see as here, it's about our brother Yaw Sarpong, God has called him so Ekuona Abusua at Asuofua came to invite you about the final funeral right."

"On 8th May, there will be a wake-keeping at Asuofua Town Park then 9th May we put him in bed for his love ones pay him last respect till we burry him and after the burial service then at 1:00 pm at Town Park then Sunday we go to church for Thanksgiving at Somoban Ampayoa New Jerusalem."

The burial service and thanksgiving ceremony are scheduled for Sunday, May 10, 2026, at the Sokoban Ampayoa New Jerusalem Church.

The Ekuona abusua (family clan) has extended an open invitation to the general public to join them in honouring the life and legacy of the late musician, whose contributions to gospel music in Ghana remain significant.

"And after the Thanksgiving at 1:00 pm we have to come to the durbal ground for the rest of the funeral rights, so we're inviting all Ghanaians to come and support Ekuona Abusua at Asuofua," he explained.
