Assembly members nationwide receive over GH₵1,000 monthly allowance - Ahmed ibrahim

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has disclosed that 9,090 assembly members across the country received a monthly allowance of over GH₵1,000 between April and December 2025.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 20, 2026, he explained that the payments were made following a directive by President John Dramani Mahama, based on an approved monthly allowance of GH₵1,300, with deductions accounting for the final take-home amount.

“For over 30 something years since 1988 that we have started practicing decentralization, assembly members were not recognized, they were not respected, they were not motivated.

“Since one of them became president of this country, President John Dramani Mahama said every assembly member must be payed an allowance of GHS1,300, and we have 9,090 assembly members in the country,” he said.

Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim further clarified that although the approved amount was GH₵1,300, statutory deductions were applied, resulting in each assembly member receiving more than GH₵1,000 monthly within the period under review.

He added that government is making plans to settle allowances for the first quarter of 2026, expressing confidence in the continuity of the policy.

“We are now planning to pay the first quarter of 2026 and once the president was able to do it in 2025, in 2026, he will do it,” he stated.
