Fire destroys shops, kiosks at Kwame Nkrumah Circle behind VVIP station

A fire broke out behind the VVIP Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

The blaze has affected several shops that served as warehouses for phone accessories and other items. Additionally, structures used as homes and food-selling kiosks were also caught in the fire.

Details regarding the cause of the fire and whether there are any injuries remain unclear at this time.

Assistant Fire Officer Nisawu Rashid Kwame confirmed in an interview with the media that the fire outbreak began in one of the kiosks.

“We have five fire engines here, including a private tanker. Some have gone to replenish about two or three times and they are here.

"We are told and confirmed that it started from a kiosk, but as to what caused the fire in the kiosk, we are yet to investigate further,” he stated.

“You can see cooking utensils, you can see cylinders that have been used, and these are all signs that domestic activities have been going on here,” he added.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have since contained the fire and brought the situation under control.
