Hawa Mohammed challenges silence on sex education after school talk

A 15-year-old Senior High School (SHS) student and founder of the Girl Illuminate Foundation, Hawa Mohammed, has spoken about the consequences of teenage pregnancy.

According to Miss Hawa, her foundation exists for a singular, urgent purpose, to equip young people with the knowledge and courage to make informed decisions about their bodies and their futures.

Addressing pupils at Seduaase KKDA Primary and Junior High School (JHS) on Friday, March 13, 2026, Miss Mohammed spoke directly to the students about the realities and consequences of teenage pregnancy.

“I started this foundation because I realized I could influence my peers positively and keep them on the right track, I decided I would be the one to start the conversation," Miss Hawa declared.

She challenged the culture of silence surrounding reproductive health, pointing out deferred dreams and the lack of age-appropriate information available to her community.

The audience, made up of primary and junior high students together with their teachers, were surprised. Faculty members, however, described the session as uniquely impactful, noting that Miss Hawa's sincerity allowed her message to resonate in a way adult-led sessions often do not.

The programme, themed ‘Empowering Futures: An Educational Talk on Teenage Pregnancy,’ was designed and organised entirely by the Girl Illuminate Foundation.

She revealed that leadership does not wait for age; however, it waits for courage.

Miss Hawa pointed out that the Girl Illuminate Foundation will continue to tackle pressing societal issues and fight for her generation.
