Spiritualist arrested over suspected ritual killing of woman in Awutu Senya

Police in the Central Region have arrested a man in his early twenties, Horlali Alatusa, over the suspected killing of a woman believed to be his girlfriend at Bentum in the Awutu Senya District.

The arrest followed a complaint from a farmer who reported a strong and unusual odour coming from part of his farmland, prompting suspicion among residents. Community members initially escorted the suspect to the area on March 10 and attempted to search for a body by digging a trench believed to have been created by him, but nothing was found.

Residents later alerted the police after noticing bloodstains around the site. During investigations, the suspect allegedly confessed and led officers to another location where the body of the unidentified woman had been hidden.

Police say the remains were discovered with several parts mutilated. Some residents suspect the killing may be ritual-related, claiming the suspect is known locally as a spiritualist who inherited his father’s deities.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim was last seen with the suspect in the community on Sunday before she was reported missing. Following the discovery, angry residents vandalised the suspect’s house.

The police have conveyed the remains for further examination, while the suspect remains in custody to assist with investigations.
