Speaker of Parliament cautions newly elected MP to prioritise constituency service

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a strong admonition to Baba Jamal, the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, urging him to remain dedicated to serving his constituents.

During a parliamentary session following Baba Jamal's swearing-in on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Speaker Bagbin reminded him of his commitment to the people of the Ayawaso East constituency.

He emphasised that Baba Jamal had voluntarily chosen to serve as an MP instead of seeking a diplomatic role, particularly expressing a desire not to serve as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

"In your campaign, you stated that you want to serve them as a Member of Parliament and by doing so serve Ghana; you don't want to serve Ghana as a High Commissioner in Nigeria. I took note of this statement, and I'm going to hold you accountable to the good people of Ayawaso East constituency," he stated.

He asserted that Baba Jamal must prioritise the needs and concerns of the Ayawaso East citizens, as his performance in Parliament will be closely monitored.

Mr. Bagbin conveyed his determination to ensure that the new MP delivers on his promises, adding, "If you refuse to serve the people well, I would personally campaign against you in the next election."
