Black Queens to press on in UAE despite regional unrest

The Black Queens of Ghana are set to continue their Pink Ladies Cup campaign in the United Arab Emirates, with team officials confirming that the squad is safe and focused despite recent regional unrest.

Following a dominant 4-0 opening victory against Hong Kong on Saturday, the Ghanaian national team’s preparations were briefly hampered by security concerns in the region.

However, Media Officer Matilda Dimedo has reassured fans that the situation is now stabilising.

Rising tensions briefly disrupted the team’s outdoor schedule, with smoke visible across the local skyline on Sunday.

As a precaution, security protocols restricted access to training pitches, forcing the squad to swap the grass for indoor gym sessions to maintain their fitness levels.

Speaking to Joy Sports, Dimedo confirmed the team is in constant dialogue with tournament organisers and the Ghanaian Consulate in the UAE.

The atmosphere within the camp has reportedly shifted from anxiety to optimism as local activity in the host city returns to normal.

The Black Queens are expected to resume full outdoor training on Monday, March 2, as they turn their attention to their second fixture against Russia.

While the football remains the priority, the team’s eventual departure remains under review.

Management is currently monitoring regional airspace to decide whether to seek an early exit before the final match against Tanzania or to stay and complete the full tournament schedule before flying home safely.

This friendly tournament serves as a vital litmus test for the Black Queens. Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren is using the Gulf trip to fine-tune his tactics ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Following the conclusion of the Pink Ladies Cup, Ghana will face Ivory Coast in a final high-stakes warm-up match before the WAFCON tournament kicks off later this month.
