Bongo DCE passes on after short illness

Joseph Akasake Abaa, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo, has died after a short illness. The cause of death is yet to be officially disclosed.

Sources close to the family said Mr. Abaa passed away at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

The news was confirmed by Alhaji Tahiru Aberinga, the Bongo Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who described the development as “shocking and unexpected.”

Mr. Abaa was nominated as DCE by John Dramani Mahama and subsequently confirmed by members of the Bongo District Assembly in April 2025. Prior to his appointment, he served the people of Zorko-Goo-Awaah as an Assembly Member for three consecutive terms.

He was an active member of the NDC, having held several positions including Bongo Constituency Youth Organiser and later Constituency Secretary in 2022.

Beyond politics, the late DCE worked as a storekeeper at Sirigu Integrated Senior High School and Zuarungu Senior High School.

Mr. Abaa’s death is a significant loss to the people of Bongo and the wider constituency he served over the years.
