The Accra High Court will today hear Chairman Wontumi’s bail application while he appeals his conviction and sentence of 20 years.
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, is asking to be released from custody while his appeal is determined.
He was convicted of illegal mining related offences linked to a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region. His lawyers are expected to formally present arguments in support of bail pending the outcome of the appeal. The Attorney General has opposed the request, arguing that Mr Boasiako poses a flight risk.
The court will consider submissions from both sides before deciding whether to grant bail. The application was filed in August as part of the defence’s effort to secure his release during the appellate process.
It was first set for hearing on August 19, but proceedings were postponed after Mr Boasiako and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, failed to appear in court.
The court clerk later told the parties that the presiding judge would be unavailable for the rest of that week, and the matter was rescheduled for today.
