President John Mahama has told the Electoral Commission’s two new deputy chairpersons he expects no preferential treatment for himself, his government or his party.
He spoke on Monday, October 12, at the swearing in of Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, Esq. He urged them to bring their experience to bear in the service of Ghanaians.
“Ensure that every eligible citizen can participate in our electoral process and that every valid vote counts and reflects the will of the people,” the President said.
He added: “The duty is to the people of Ghana; discharge your duty without favoring any candidate or party. I expect no preferential treatment for myself, my government, and party.”
The appointments fill vacancies created by recent departures and strengthen the commission’s leadership as it carries out its electoral responsibilities.
Ms. Agbenyo is Deputy Director of Operations at the Ghana TVET Service.
Mr. Asamoah is a former Director of Finance at the EC and a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He also served as Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit at the commission.
The appointments follow the resignation of Dr. Bossman Asare, who oversaw Corporate Affairs. He left effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana.
They also follow the retirement of Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairperson responsible for Operations, who reached the mandatory retirement age.
