The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined an offer from MTN Ghana to donate GHS20 million to Ghanaian victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, saying the Mahama administration has already made adequate provisions for evacuations and reintegration.

According to a statement issued on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa's Facebook page, the ministry said it became aware of media reports attributing the proposed donation to an interview given by MTN Board Chairman Dr Ishmael Yamson.

While the government commended MTN for the offer, it respectfully declined because funds for the ongoing humanitarian operation have already been budgeted.

“This position of the Government of Ghana had earlier been directly conveyed to the Board Chair and CEO of MTN when they called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP) on August 14, 2026,” the ministry said.

The ministry assured the public that the government remains fully committed to providing financial support for all Ghanaians being evacuated and reintegrated.

It added that, in the interest of transparency and accountability, it will present a comprehensive account of the total cost of evacuations once the exercise is concluded.

The statement also emphasized that the government will continue to foster a favourable business environment for international brands operating in Ghana and reiterated that the welfare of all Ghanaians remains the utmost priority.
