Tragedy has struck the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region after a serving officer was killed in a road accident.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 29, at Ahwiaa Market in Mamponteng.
According to a situation report from the Tafo Pankrono Divisional Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), the collision happened at about 0320 hours.
The deceased has been identified as No. 49152 G/Sgt. Michael Ottoo, who was until recently attached to the Tafo Pankrono Divisional MTTD.
The report states that he was riding an unregistered Royal motorbike from Bomfa towards Tafo Pankrono to report for duty when the accident occurred.
Police said that on reaching a section of the road in front of Ahwiaa Market, an unregistered Honda Acura saloon car from the opposite direction allegedly veered from its lane into the officer’s path and collided with his motorbike.
G/Sgt. Ottoo sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, for emergency care.
He was, however, pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The suspect driver has been identified as 24‑year‑old Marfo Emmanuel and is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.
The MTTD also confirmed that both the accident vehicle and the motorbike have been impounded at the station for technical examination.
The Tafo Pankrono Divisional Command has expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and to the Police Service. Investigations into the circumstances leading to the crash are ongoing.
