The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Biosafety Authority (NBA), Kwame Dei Asamoah Okyere, has assured Ghanaians that the Authority is working tirelessly to prevent unwanted and unsafe products from entering the country’s market.

Speaking at the launch of Ghana’s Fifth National Report on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, held at the University of Ghana (UG) Atomic Campus in Dome‑Kwabenya, Greater Accra Region, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Mr Asamoah Okyere emphasised that the NBA is the regulator responsible for assessing new consumable products coming into Ghana.

He explained that the Authority ensures such products are safe for human consumption and for the environment.

Mr Asamoah Okyere further affirmed the NBA’s mission and vision to protect public health and the environment, while positioning Ghana as a regulatory hub for biotechnology, biosafety and biosecurity in Africa.

The CEO noted that the Authority has evaluated the effectiveness of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), including plants, animals and microorganisms.

"Ghana has moved from merely drafting a biosafety framework on paper to operationalizing a functional system that not only safeguards health and the environment but also attracts investment into the biotechnology sector," Mr Asamoah Okyere said.

He, however, urged Ghanaians to trust the NBA, assuring them that the Authority exists to protect their interests and to ensure a safe and sustainable future.
