Avenor building collapse: 1 dead confirmed

One person has been confirmed dead following the collapse of a three-storey building under construction at Avenor in North Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region, as emergency teams continue a frantic search for others believed to be trapped beneath the debris.

Accra Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, confirmed the fatality in an interview with Citi News’ Jude Duncan on Sunday, June 7, while indicating that rescue operations were still ongoing at the scene.

According to him, emergency responders were still working to evacuate possible survivors trapped under the rubble as efforts intensified to stabilize the site and prevent further casualties.

The incident occurred earlier in the day opposite the Ashfoam showroom and near the Melcom Plus outlet, where the structure, still under construction and believed to be a mixed-use building with shops on the ground floor—suddenly gave way.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), supported by other security agencies, are leading search-and-rescue operations, with heavy-duty equipment deployed to clear debris and access collapsed sections of the building.

Fire officials say they are still working to reach deeper parts of the rubble where additional victims are suspected to be trapped.

Authorities have meanwhile cautioned the public to stay away from the area to allow emergency teams to operate without obstruction as rescue efforts continue.

Investigations into the cause of the collapse are expected to follow after the rescue operation is concluded.
