We are poised to revive VALCO - Lands Minister Reveals

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has disclosed that the government is taking concrete steps to modernise and revive the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), positioning it as a major driver of Ghana’s industrial transformation.

This announcement was made during a working visit by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to the Ministry on January 27, 2026. The visit is part of efforts to assess performance across ministries and strengthen coordination with the Presidency.

In her remarks, the Vice President stated that the visit was one of many to various ministries, emphasising its purpose of assessing performance and fostering coordination between her office and the ministry.

The Sector Minister, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, briefed the Vice President on the Ministry's mandate, the agencies under its purview, and the challenges he inherited as Minister.

In addressing steps taken by the Ministry to tackle these inherited challenges, the Minister discussed plans to modernise and revive VALCO. He revealed that plans are underway to ensure VALCO provides maximum benefits to Ghanaians, reiterating its potential as a cornerstone in driving Ghana's industrialisation.

He said, "VALCO is a quiet lion that can change our country. We have big plans for its revival."

The Minister's statement follows weeks after a 12-member inter-ministerial committee, which was inaugurated in November 2025 to identify a strategic investor for VALCO, submitted its report to the Minister.

The modernisation of VALCO is a key component of GIADEC's strategy to establish a fully integrated aluminium industry in Ghana, aligning with national industrial transformation objectives.

The project is anticipated to revitalise VALCO, enhance its annual production capacity, safeguard existing employment, and generate thousands of new direct and indirect job opportunities for Ghanaians.

This will restore VALCO's prominence and contribute to Ghana's long-term economic prosperity.
