The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi Constituency and flagbearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bryan Acheampong, has revealed that the poor choice of presidential candidate presented by the party led to their defeat in the 2024 general elections.
In an engagement with delegates in Atwima Mponua and its surrounding constituencies, he lamented how disheartening it is for the NPP to have lost completely in seven strong regions during their political era, something that has never happened before.
Dr Bryan Acheampong continued by stating that for a political party as significant as the NPP to lose in Volta, Oti, Upper East, Upper West, Savanna, Bono East, and Western North regions without winning a single constituency among them clearly indicates that the party is gradually sinking and in need of new reforms.
"The most painful aspect was how President Mahama won the Savanna region, where his hometown is, and secured three constituencies in Dr Bawumia's North East region," he stated.
He stressed that Dr Bawumia's incompetence demonstrates that he is not fit to lead the party in the 2028 general election.
The flagbearer hopeful further added that another shock in the 2024 election defeat was how the party only won one constituency out of the 17 in the Western region, indicating that the margin used to secure that constituency was far from impressive.
In his address, he emphasised that another significant loss contributing to the party's defeat in 2024 was the Zongo communities, explaining that the country comprises 3,000 Zongo communities, of which the NPP only won one.
"If Dr Bawumia could lead the party to this massive defeat in 2024, can the party still entrust him with the 2028 elections?" he questioned.
Dr Bryan Acheampong called on delegates to entrust the party to a leader who could reform its structures for victory in 2028.
