Uganda Cubs have secured qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2026 in Qatar after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Ghana in a play-off match.
The Ugandan side, coached by Laryea Kingston, defeated Ghana 8-7 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
The match was played on Saturday night at the Mohammed VI Football Complex. Ghana took an early lead through Eric Gyamfi in the 9th minute.
Uganda responded in the 34th minute when Owen Mukisa restored parity to make it 1-1. After the break, Ghana regained the lead in the 51st minute through Abdul Latif. With the game heading to a close, Uganda were awarded a late penalty in added time.
Arafat Ibanda converted from the spot to level the score at 2-2 and force penalties. In the shoot-out, Uganda scored all eight of their penalties.
Ghana’s Jacob Kpoeti missed his spot-kick, handing Uganda qualification to the global tournament.
In an earlier play-off match, another CECAFA side, Ethiopia, also failed to qualify after losing 5-4 on penalties to Mozambique following a 1-1 draw.
