Nine miners trapped after pit collapse at Konongo

Nine miners became trapped when a mining pit collapsed on Wednesday evening in Konongo, Asante Akyem Central Municipality, Ashanti Region.

According to reports the collapse occurred while they were working underground, blocking their escape and leaving them beneath rubble.

Rescue teams and fellow miners have been at the scene attempting to free them, but no one had been brought out at the time of reporting.

The NADMO Director for Asante Akyem Central, Lanbon Joseph, said all nine miners are alive and safe and in contact with rescuers by radio.

He reported they are surviving on water they took into the pit, and that rescue operations continue above ground.

Mr Joseph urged relatives and local residents to stay calm while emergency crews work to reach the trapped miners.

He added that the National Ambulance Service and other response teams are on standby to provide immediate medical care once the miners are extricated.
