Parliament confirms detention of Asante Akyem North MP at Amsterdam airport

Parliament has confirmed that the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands.

The development was disclosed in an official statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, on behalf of the House.

According to Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Speaker and the leadership of the House are currently engaging Ghana's Mission in The Hague to obtain detailed information regarding the circumstances surrounding the detention of the Independent lawmaker.

“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands,” portions of the statement said.

Parliament added that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague is actively working to establish the facts of the matter and will brief the House accordingly.

“The Rt Hon Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement further noted.

The exact reasons behind the MP’s detention have not yet been made public.

The incident has already generated public interest both in Ghana and abroad, with many awaiting further clarification from parliamentary authorities and Ghana’s diplomatic representatives in the Netherlands.

Parliament assured the public that additional updates would be communicated as soon as more details emerge.
