Ghanaian sprint star Benjamin Azamati has been ruled out of the upcoming CAA African Senior Athletics Championships after sustaining a groin injury.
The championship is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, May 12 to Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon.
Azamati’s withdrawal is a major setback for Ghana’s medal ambitions at the continental competition. The national record-holder in sprinting was widely tipped as one of the leading contenders in the men’s sprint events and a potential podium finisher.
His absence is expected to significantly alter Ghana’s sprint prospects, with fans and athletics enthusiasts expressing disappointment over the development, given the high expectations surrounding his participation.
The injury comes at a crucial time for the athlete, who has been one of Ghana’s most consistent performers on the track in recent years and a key figure in the country’s relay and individual sprint events.
Team officials are yet to announce whether a replacement will be named or how the squad will be adjusted ahead of the championships.
The African Senior Athletics Championships will bring together top athletes from across the continent, with competition expected to be intense across track and field events over the five-day programme in Accra.
